Having a stomach ache can really put a damper on your whole day or night.
Once you have stomach pain, it is kind of hard to take your mind off of it until it goes away. If you have work, school, or just a busy day ahead of you, it is important that you fight the pain! If your stomach is acting up, try some of these stomach pain remedies:
Stop eating. Your digestive system could be acting up because of something that you ate earlier. If you continue to eat, your digestive system may have a difficult time digesting that food because it’s already having a hard time with what you previously ate. Give your stomach time to relax. Don’t eat anything for a few hours and see if the pain subsides.
Lay down. Sometimes if you are doing too many things, your stomach can become bothered. Take a few minutes to rest. Lay down on your bed or on your coach with your feet elevated. Close your eyes and take deep breaths.
Drink clear liquids. Grab a glass of water and take baby sips to see if your stomach can handle it. You don’t want to take big gulps. Giving your stomach anything too big could cause even more pain, nausea, or even vomiting. Keep your fluid intake at a minimum until your pain subsides. You can also suck on a few ice chips just to keep you hydrated.
Have some peppermint tea. Peppermint has been shown to calm your stomach by relaxing the muscles in your stomach. This will allow for easier digestion. The peppermint flavor has also been shown to ward off nausea. Take small sips so you don’t upset your stomach even more.
Have some chicken broth. After a few hours of not eating and if your pain is still there, you should have some kind of caloric intake. Chicken broth is a clear liquid that contains some sodium and nutrients to keep you from hitting that starvation level. Though you may not feel hungry, your body still needs food. If you don’t feed it anything, you could make the stomach pains worse or you could add to your pain by giving yourself a headache. If the pain isn’t too bad, add some noodles and chicken chunks. See what you can handle.
Take ginger. If you are feeling nauseous, ginger is one of the best home remedies for stomach pain. You can grind up some fresh ginger in boiling water and sip it like tea or you can take a ginger capsule which you can find at your local drug store.
Draw yourself a hot bath. If you’re unsure of why you have the stomach pain the first place, taking a hot bath is a great stomach pain remedy. If you aren’t nauseous, add some nice smelling bubbles for a really relaxing feel.
Use a heating pad. If the pain is like cramps, a heating pad will work wonders. Lay down and put the heating pad directly on the spot where you are experiencing the pain.
Drink a glass of milk. If the pain you are experiencing is due to heartburn or reflux, milk can help to neutralize that excess stomach acid which is most likely causing your pain. As long as dairy isn’t an issue with your stomach, have a glass!
Follow the BRAT diet for diarrhea. If you have diarrhea along with your stomach pain, there are a few foods that you should be eating. BRAT is an acronym for bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast. These are all foods that are gentle on the stomach and also help to absorb toxins. They will help bind your stool together to get rid of that diarrhea.
Sip chamomile tea. One of the best stomach pain remedies out there is to sip on some chamomile tea. Chamomile has been shown to help relax the muscles of the digestive system which can lessen abdominal discomfort.
Use reflexology. If your stomach pain is from being tense or stressed, a little bit of foot reflexology can go along way. There are a ton of nerves in your feet that are directly related to the rest of the body. Getting a little foot massage can help relax the stomach.
These are just a few of the best home remedies for stomach pain. If the pain does not go away in a day or two or if you are in severe pain, it is best to seek medical attention as soon as possible. It could be something you ate or it could be something much worse. Monitor your symptoms and seek help if needed.
