Low-carbohydrate diet plans go in and out of fashion. Since Atkins came on the scene, this way of eating has become commonplace. People make paleo-friendly food choices and often preach the lifestyle to potential converts. Even though it’s trendy nowadays, it certainly wasn’t the case to focus on protein and fat 20-30 years ago. Then, loads of rice and pasta were all the rage. Joggers led the way forward in fitness and they needed tons of carbohydrates to fuel their aerobic activities. There was, however, a pre-Atkins diet favored by many old-school bodybuilders. Pioneered by Vince Gironda, an effective albeit eccentric trainer to the stars, it consisted solely of steak and eggs.
WHAT ELSE CAN I EAT ON THE STEAK AND EGGS DIET?
Nothing. You can eat steak and eggs. Two meals a day. For breakfast, or brunch if you prefer, cook yourself a nice steak and have three to six eggs. You can use butter to cook the eggs however you like. Go to work, hit the gym, and when you get home, prepare another generous portion of steak and eggs. Don’t add oatmeal to the diet. Don’t add a serving of rice. Not even vegetables.
THOU’ SHALT CHEAT ONCE A WEEK
The seventh day of the week will be your cheat day. Go ahead and binge. Have a pizza, some ice cream, a rich pasta dish, and a huge burrito. Then, start over again with steak and eggs.
WHY YOU’LL LOSE BODY FAT
Like other zero carbohydrate diets, steak and eggs is ketogenic. Your body won’t be able to use carbohydrates as a fuel source, so it will turn to body fat stores instead. You may also notice more energy throughout the day. By not eating carbs, you’ll avoid any spikes in insulin and the resulting changes in energy levels. It’s also worth noting that high protein diets are great for muscle building. Additionally, the high saturated fats and cholesterol are the chemical precursors for testosterone. Steak and eggs is very anabolic.
This isn’t a diet to remain on for your entire life. It’s a way to get lean pretty quickly. For balanced health, eating a wider variety of foods and including vegetables is probably better for you. Still, steak and eggs will supply you with everything your body needs. Beef is highly concentrated in iron, zinc and b vitamins. Eggs contain a great balance of types of fat and are full of calcium and magnesium. If you want, just take a multivitamin every day to cover your nutrient bases.
The biggest problem with the steak and eggs diet is getting bored. As much as you think you love this fantastic meal combination, see how you feel about a nice steak after three weeks. It can be mentally draining. You can mix things up a little by learning the countless ways to prepare eggs, but there really isn’t that much variety. Nonetheless, it’s a great way to get lean quite quickly.
