Bell Plantation PB2: Powdered Peanut Butter Review

Is powdered peanut butter the future of peanut butter? How does it compare to the traditional gooey stuff that we know and love.

It’s called the second generation of peanut butter because it’s really like a futuristic peanut butter that comes powdered.  The reason it’s powdered is because over 85% of the fat is pressed out in a process that doesn’t alter the yummy and nutritious benefits of the peanuts.  This basically gives you a much lower fat alternative to peanut butter while saving yourself from the excess calories (if you’re not looking to put on some weight or need a quick calorie boost).  You might be thinking why there is a need for peanut butter? In one quick and easy word: convenience.

Taste - 7/10

The taste of PB2 honestly isn’t too different from the regular natural peanut butter you’re used to. But what can you expect from the sole ingredients of: roasted peanuts, sugar and salt. I know most natural peanut butters only contain peanuts and nothing else but there is really a miniscule amount of sugar or salt, specifically 1 gram of sugar per serving and even less salt than that!  The texture is virtually indistinguishable from traditional peanut butter except you can control the level of consistency yourself.  The best part is, the fats that have extracted really don’t affect the taste at all and it tastes just like wholesome natural peanuts.

There is also PB2 with premium chocolate and it is just as delicious as it sounds.  Who can’t use some extra chocolate with some peanut butter.  No need to feel guilty because it’s still only a measly 45 calories per serving.

Nutrition - 9/10

Nuts have always been toted as a great fitness food because of the nutritional benefits that it provides. Though one of the big benefits of peanuts are the monosatured fats, there’s still many more healthy features of non fat powdered peanut butter like: being high in protein, antioxidants, magnesium, folate, vitamin E, copper, arginine, and fiber. Last but not least, all of this nutty goodness comes with 85% less fat calories.  To be specific, 2 tablespoons of traditional peanut butter is around 190 calories with PB2 coming in at only 45.  That’s a pretty big difference when it comes to watching your calorie intake.

Convenience - 10/10

Now here is where we believe PB2: Powdered Peanut Butter really shines.  The convenience of a powdered peanut butter is really hard to beat. This is especially true when we’re all on the go with our protein powder ready to come with us. You can just put in a tablespoon or two of PB2 and the peanut butter will mix up perfectly along with your protein.  Having a dry powdered peanut butter now allows you to take it virtually anywhere with no need for refrigeration.  One of the best parts is getting rid of the sticky hard to wash mess that always comes with scooping out a glob of peanut butter.  You can also use PB2 as a substitute for any recipe that requires peanut butter as well!

Value - 8/10

To give PB2 a try you should probably start with the 4 pack which is approximately $16. This comes out to 25 cents for a serving of yummy convenient peanut butter which isn’t bad at all.  If you really enjoy it you can really stock up and invest in the 1 pound bags and really take advantage of the savings.  But all in all the price is quite similar to traditional peanut butter with the added convenience factor unless you’re stranded in the desert with no water.

Overall - 8.5/10

If you like peanut butter and all the health benefits associated with it, PB2 is a convenient low calorie alternative. Though if you’re not watching your weight and don’t mind a glob of peanut butter sitting in your shaker cup then your traditional peanut butter may not need to be replaced.  But for those of you who love indulging in peanut butter but are calorie conscious, this may be the perfect product for you.
